Access to ChatGPT is currently being restored following a disruption that occurred on Thursday afternoon. Users experienced issues with ChatGPT, its API, and the text-to-video generator Sora, all of which were affected by a problem with an “upstream provider,” as confirmed by OpenAI.
The disruption began around 1:30 PM ET on Thursday, leading to ChatGPT becoming inoperable for a significant number of users. Users reported that the chatbot was unable to respond to inquiries, and some encountered an “internal server error” message.
As the issue persisted, Down Detector reports started to spike, indicating a widespread problem with ChatGPT. OpenAI posted a status update on its website at 2 PM ET, acknowledging the high error rates affecting ChatGPT, the API, and Sora.
By 6:15 PM ET, OpenAI reported that Sora was fully operational again, and APIs were beginning to recover. However, a comprehensive solution for ChatGPT and its APIs was still in progress, as mentioned in the most recent update.
Microsoft, which serves as the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI, also experienced a power issue at one of its datacenters that coincided with the problems faced by OpenAI. The power incident impacted North America and caused issues with Xbox cloud gaming, though the specific upstream provider responsible for the problem was not disclosed.
Customers in the South Central United States were particularly affected by storage latency, timeouts, and HTTP 500 errors stemming from the power incident. Microsoft issued a statement informing customers of the degraded experience and stated that mitigation measures were being implemented to restore services.
After working to resolve the issue, Microsoft announced that the affected datacenter had been fully restored to power by 5 p.m. Eastern Time on the same day.
The downtime experienced by ChatGPT is not an isolated incident, as the platform has faced intermittent outages in recent months. Following OpenAI’s launch of Sora for ChatGPT subscribers, both the video generation utility and ChatGPT experienced an extended period of downtime. Additionally, a widespread outage in June affected AI tools, including ChatGPT.
As of December 26th, Microsoft and OpenAI are working diligently to address the ongoing issues with ChatGPT and its APIs. Users are advised to stay updated through official channels for further information and updates on the restoration process.
