Since its debut, The White Lotus has stood out for featuring captivating stories set in luxury hotels situated in exotic locations. Created by Mike White, the series has captivated audiences with its plot that blends social satire, drama, and comedy, portraying the complex dynamics between wealthy guests and local employees.

The first two seasons were set in Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii and Sicily, exploring the social tensions beneath the glamorous surface of these tourist paradises. Now, the Emmy-winning series takes the audience to Thailand, diving into new mysteries amidst lush landscapes and a rich cultural tapestry.

The new season features an all-star cast, including Carrie Coon, Michelle Monaghan, Jason Isaacs, Leslie Bibb, Walton Goggins, Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Thai K-pop star Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal. Additionally, Natasha Rothwell returns as Belinda, the spa manager from the first season, now taking on a more central and complex role.

The locations chosen for the third season are a true invitation to luxury tourism. Most of the filming took place on Koh Samui, one of the most iconic islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Known for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush vegetation, Koh Samui is home to some of the country’s most luxurious resorts.

Continuing the tradition of filming at Four Seasons properties, the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui transforms into the fictional White Lotus Resort & Spa. Private villas with pools, sophisticated restaurants, outdoor areas, and fitness spaces serve as the backdrop for the plot twists. The resort, surrounded by coconut trees and offering panoramic views of the turquoise sea, provides the perfect setting for the conflicts and mysteries that unfold.

Other locations on Koh Samui were also used. The charming Singing Bird Lounge, located at Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort, became the White Lotus bar in the series, setting the stage for dramatic encounters and revealed secrets. Meanwhile, Anantara Bophut Koh Samui provided settings for the lobby, entrance, and even a fictional jewelry store, adding more luxury to the narrative.

Highlights on the island also include Choeng Mon Beach, known for its tranquility and natural beauty, Am Samui Resort Taling Ngam, Wat Phu Khao Thong temple—featured in scenes of spiritual contemplation—and the Dusit Dheva Cultural Center, where characters explore Thailand’s rich culture. The Cape Fahn Hotel and Pi Samui Beach Club and Restaurant were also key locations, bringing a modern and sophisticated touch.

The iconic Haad Rin Beach on Koh Phangan, famous for its Full Moon parties, appears in vibrant scenes capturing the electrifying energy of tropical nights. The spectacular Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, an archipelago of 42 islands, served as the backdrop for the characters’ arrival scenes and boat explorations, offering breathtaking views of limestone cliffs and hidden lagoons.

Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, also served as a backdrop. The Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Resort was the location for scenes involving Belinda, who now takes on a more prominent role as she explores new business opportunities. Ta Khai Restaurant at Rosewood Phuket hosted sophisticated dining scenes, highlighting Thai cuisine in an elegant, seaside setting.

Other points in Phuket featured include the Bangla Boxing gym, where characters experience intense Muay Thai lessons, Ya Nui Beach—a setting for romantic moments—the Phuket Yacht Haven marina, and the famous Café Del Mar, known for its sunset parties.

Ko Lawa Yai island, near Phang Nga Bay, was chosen for arrival scenes and tours, with its emerald waters and towering cliffs creating a stunning backdrop for the characters’ adventures.

The Thai capital also gets its moment in the spotlight. The iconic Mandarin Oriental Hotel appears in luxurious scenes portraying the contrast between the vibrant urban environment and tropical landscapes. Floating markets, historic temples, and the nightlife of Bangkok also appear in brief, yet memorable, sequences.

The expectation surrounding the series’ tourism impact is already materializing. Since the announcement of the new season, searches for accommodations in Koh Samui have risen by 40%, according to Hotels.com. Hotels and travel agencies are leveraging the series’ popularity to create customized packages that allow visitors to experience the White Lotus experience.

“It’s an honor to see the incredible Thailand serving as the backdrop for the highly anticipated new season of The White Lotus,” commented Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. “The natural beauty, vibrant culture, fantastic cuisine, and luxury experiences make our country the perfect setting.”

Thailand, which had already recorded over 35 million international visitors in 2024, expects even greater growth in 2025, with a target of 39 to 40 million tourists. The White Lotus phenomenon promises to not only entertain the audience but also strengthen Thai tourism, inspiring travelers to explore the stunning settings showcased in the series.

Beyond its economic impact, the series also sparks interest in Thai culture and traditions. Scenes involving Buddhist ceremonies, local festivals, and authentic markets offer viewers a glimpse into the true Thailand, beyond its paradisiacal landscapes.

For fans, it’s the perfect opportunity to live their own version of this luxurious and intriguing experience—with the added bonus of exploring one of the most fascinating and welcoming countries in the world.
